    ATTEND, ATTEND TO, ON (UPON)
Глагол attend может употребляться в переходном и непереходном значениях. Attend с прямым дополнением имеет значение 'посещать, присутствовать' (на лекции, собрании и т. д.): to attend school, to attend lessons (classes). В первоначальном непереходном значении 'внимать, внимательно слушать' attend встречается редко и имеет книжный оттенок: hear and attend and listen; в этом значении теперь преимущественно употребляется attend с предлогом to: to attend to a speaker (attend без дополнения приобрело значение 'внимательно следить за чьей-л. речью', 'проявлять внимание': you are not attending 'вы невнимательны'). Attend to, кроме указанного значения 'слушать', передает значение 'относиться с вниманием, проявлять заботу о ком-л.': to attend to one's aged parents, to attend to the education of one's children. Attend on (upon) употребляется в значении 'обслуживать' (удовлетворять чьи-л. нужды или потребности): to attend on (upon) a customer.
